Clinical Features

This department is one of the main centers in Japan where the Nuss operation for pectus excavatum (funnel chest) is performed. Patients visit us from all over Japan. The Nuss operation, which is known as a minimally invasive operation for pectus excavatum, became a standard treatment for children. We also perform operations for adult patients with pectus excavatum.

Another main area in our department concerns laparoscopic surgery for inguinal hernia in children. With laparoscopic guidance, an internal inguinal ring is closed using a special needle. This procedure is referred to as LPEC (laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure). This operation is minimally invasive and effective for the treatment of contralateral hernia.
