Main Areas and Themes of Research

Esophago-gastric area:

surgical oncotaxsis, minimal invasive surgery, function-preserving surgery, chemoradiotherapy for esophageal cancer, endoscopic surgery,

Colorectal area:

minimally invasive surgery with laparoscopy for colorectal disease; preserving anal sphincter function for lower rectal cancer with a high-level surgical technique and evidence for such; personalized chemotherapy for advanced colorectal cancer, using predictive markers.

Hepato-biliary-pancreatic area:

prognostic factors in resected carcinoma of the pancreas; prognostic factors after resection for distal bile duct cancer; retroperitoneoscopic necrosectomy for infected pancreatic necrosis; bile duct injury during laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Clinical Features

We treat diseases of the digestive organs of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, and biliary tract. Although cancer treatment is the main area of our mission, we also treat inflammatory and functional digestive diseases. We have employed endoscopic surgery in almost all parts of surgical treatments. As surgical oncologists, we treat all stages of malignant disease of digestive organs: operation, chemotherapy and participation with palliative care. We have investigated personalized therapy for cancer treatment with a great deal of energy.

Educational Features

The purpose of medical education is to produce good physicians with a high level of knowledge in science, art and humanity. To achieve this goal, medical education, which starts from the undergraduate period, should continue for life. Surgical education should also be a lifelong endeavor. In the past, the education system has been teacher-centered. Under the new system, it should be student-centered, and students must have the ability to question and solve problems. Giving undergraduates the opportunity to experience bed-side learning may offer them the best understanding of everyday surgical practice. Therefore, such learning programs should be created. Medical school staff, including professors, should recognize that their primary obligation is to impact education and spend more time in this area. Surgical education for undergraduates is especially important since it influences their future careers as surgeons.
